Wifredo Lam, a seminal figure and influential precursor to artists including Carlos Alfonzo, unveils a realm steeped in Afro-Cuban mythology, featuring hybrid figures, symbolism, and spirituality in Wifredo Lam: Dynasty of Deities, Unveiled. The focused exhibition, presented in tandem with Carlos Alfonzo: Legacy, offers visitors a unique opportunity to discover two distinct perspectives. Both Lam and Alfonzo delve into themes of the Caribbean, Afro-Cuban heritage, and European influences. Bold lines, organic shapes, and Santeria imagery characterize Alfonzo’s work, “[exemplifying] most directly the ties to a sort of substyle within Latino/Hispanic Modernism… [a] Picassesque Surrealism (Picasso via Lam…),” as noted by Jane Livingston in her catalog essay for, Hispanic Art in the United States (1987).
Witness the silent conversation between master works in Wifredo Lam: Dynasty of Deities, Unveiled and Carlos Alfonzo: Legacy, on view through April 13, 2024.
