and HIGHLIGHTS
NEW EXHIBITIONS | SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 22, 2018
Launching its second Fall Season, LnS Gallery presents REDACTED, an exhibition by César Trasobares. Featuring a suite of recent constructions made with recycled metal bookshelves, the show also includes special pieces in various media and a site installation in our project space, .
Gallerist Sergio Cernuda comments: “Luisa and I are proud to share with the South Florida community an exciting group of recent and historical works by César Trasobares, showcasing a rare gallery collaboration by one of Miami’s prominent legendary artists.”
Through his installations and exhibitions of the last 40 years, Trasobares has engaged official display furniture as metaphors for the indexing, studying and presenting of cultural artifacts and scientific specimens. In a surprising reversal, these recent works embody an intentional makeover of the functional, culture-organizing objects into unusable enigmatic structures.
According to the artist, the bookshelves are transformed, in part, as a response to today’s widespread questioning of factual reality. Following the truth-bending theme, the title of the exhibition is derived from the official practice to redact documents, concealing the full scope of a text with black boxes covering words and often hiding crucial information.
These works can be seen through the lens of personal psychology as brutal actions of uncensored dissent as well as expressions of uncompromising social and political commentary. Gallerist Luisa Lignarolo expands: “César’s exhibition reflects an artist’s emotional protest against the blasting of knowledge from many fronts and the resulting atmosphere of intellectual debasement.”
While these constructions –made within the last year– can be framed by theories of institutional critique, a deep personal perspective informs the works. In his text about the exhibition, the artist is also considering the inevitable transformative effects of evolving technology:
REDACTED is documented in a publication by the artist, published by the gallery.
Coinciding with REDACTED, at LnS Gallery until November 3rd, another major installation by Trasobares, CUBAN STREAMS: 1865-1965, is on view at Miami’s historic Freedom Tower until May 2019. Using digital technology, the installation presents historic maps and photographs from the Ramiro A. Fernández collection and books. The Cuban Legacy Gallery is on the second floor of the building which also houses Miami-Dade College’s Museum of Art and Design at 600 Biscayne Boulevard.
REDACTED will be presented at LnS GALLERY alongside HIGHLIGHTS, an ongoing curated selection of artworks in various media by internationally acclaimed artists such as Carlos Alfonzo, Uta Barth, Marta María Pérez Bravo, Enoc Perez, Tomás Sánchez, Mario Bencomo, Fernando García, Jake Fernandez, John Bailly, Jennifer Basile, Tim Buwalda, Robert DeYoung, Jessie Laino, Gabriela Noelle, William Osorio, Arturo Rodríguez, Trek6, Tony Vázquez-Figueroa, and others.
